MAJKA, DEBORAH (Debbie) M. -- ACPC President

Deborah Majka, the current President of the American Council for Polish Culture, is a native Philadelphian, who completed three, two-year terms as President from 1993-1999. Debbie's also a member of the Pulaski and Skalny Scholarship Committees, the Brigadier General Kazimierz Pulaski Reinterment Committee and National Convention Co-Chair. Last Fall, she was elected Vice-President for Cultural Activities of the Polish American Congress, a new position especially created for her in addition to serving on the Financial Development Committee and representing ACPC.

She earned an M.S. in Counseling and Human Relations from Villanova University. Professionally, she holds a marketing position with Rohm and Haas Company, an international chemical manufacturing company headquartered in Philadelphia. She continues to volunteer for a number of company-sponsored social service programs in addition to many Polish-American organizations.

On the local level, Debbie is President of the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia, an affiliate of ACPC, and the Society's past President, having served four, two-year terms. She's also the Chairperson of this year's Annual ACPC Convention hosted by the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia. She is a charter member and President of the Marcella Kochanska-Sembrich Female Chorus, No. 321, Polish Singers' Alliance of America, and, together with the members of the Chorus, has sponsored the Adam Mickiewicz Polish Language School Junior Chorus No. 22. Debbie's Saturday mornings are devoted to teaching Polish language to both children and adults at the Adam Mickiewicz Polish Language School, where she is currently the Principal. She was recently elected President of the Associated Polish Home, where she had been the Financial Secretary for more than ten years. She's also member of the Philadelphia-Torun Sister City Committee.

A new venture for Debbie is producing and hosting a half-hour radio program in English on Polish topics, entitled Polonia Today, which may be heard on Mondays in the Greater Delaware Valley at 1540 AM, WNWR and is streaming and archived at: www.wnwr.com. She also hosts the Polonia View segment of the local Polish TV program, Kalejdoskop, where she conducts interviews with prominent Polonian authors, artists and activists.

She has received numerous awards and medals including Medal Zaslugi (Polish Army Veterans); Distinguished Woman of the Year (Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia); Polish American World Newspaper Citizen of the Year, the ACPC Founders Award, Poland's Krzyz Kawalerski, Orderu Zaslugi (Cavalier Cross of the Order of Merit), and the Pulaski-O'Neil Medal (City of Savannah). Debbie is the widow of Henry Majka, who was an avid sailor and the Financial Staff Officer with Flotilla 2-76 of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Philadelphia.
