Chernis, JoAnn

JoAnn Chernis, the daughter of George and Sophie Chernis, resides in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia and is a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. She attended St. Columba Grade School, Roxborough High School and St. Joseph's University where she earned an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts.

Concerning her professional career, she is a graduate of Wilfred Academy and is a practicing state licensed cosmetologist. She has owned and operated her own salon in various locations in center city Philadelphia.

As a person interested in the environment and concerned with the protection of wildlife, she has for several years been an active member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Sierra Club. She is also a member and a supporter of World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace and the Philadelphia Zoo. JoAnn is an avid gardener, she also enjoys cooking, photography, reading and the opera; but she especially enjoys taking care of the menagerie sharing their lives with her.

An important part of her life is her interest in art and art history; she is presently a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art where she has taken several courses. This, along with a concern for the well being of children, motivated her to become a volunteer for the Committee to Benefit the Children (CBC). The CBC hosts an annual fund raising art exhibit and sale for the benefit of St. Christopher's Hospital.

JoAnnn has been an active member of the Polish Heritage Society and for the past several years holds the office of Recording Secretary. She has served on various committees, including the Adam Styka Art Exhibit, co- chaired the Chopin Concert, Pulaski Day Parade, bus trips and has been a volunteer at the Kosciuszko House.
