Chmielinski (Chmielinska), Stephania

Florist. Civic leader. Born in 1866 in Poland. In 1891 came to U.S. and settled in Chicago, Ill. In 1898 founded the Polish Women's Alliance of America, and was elected its first president; the organization has now (1943) over 70,000 members. Organized Educational Department connected with this organization. In 1900 founded "Glos Polek," the Polish weekly paper, organ of said organization in Chicago, Ill. At XVL convention was elected honorary president of the Polish Women's Alliance of America. For her prominent services rendered to Poland and to Union of Polish Women in America, was decorated by the Polish Government with golden cross of merit in 1939. Died February 24, 1939.
