STANLEY A. CIESIELSKI

ACPC PRESIDENT, 1981-1984

During my presidency I strove to integrate the ACPC [American Council for Polish Culture] into the network of national Polish American organizations. Cooperation with the Kosciuszko Foundation was established early in ACPCC [American Council of Polish Cultural Clubs] history, but I expanded contacts with the other leading Polish cultural organizations. Approaches were made to the Polish American Historical Association, the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences and the National Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs. Close ties were forged with the Polish American Congress thanks to the cooperation of the late Aloysius Mazewski, then president of the Congress. In 1981 I designated Vice-President Alfred Bochenek our representative on the Board of Directors of the Polish American Congress (PAC). In June 1983 I attended the national Board meeting of the PAC; President Mazewski asked me to serve as chairman of his newly created "Cultural Commission". He was of the opinion that ACPCC had the capability of taking action on proposed cultural programs affecting the whole Polish American community.

A national Conference of Cultural Organizations capped these liaison efforts. The conference was the outstanding event of the 1983 convention. The participating organizations were: American Council of Polish Cultural Clubs; American Institute of Polish Culture; National Advocates Society; Polish American Congress; Polish American Historical Association; Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences and Studium - the North American Study Center. The Conference was chaired by Dr. John Kromkowski, President of the National Center for Urban Affairs. Thanks to Dr. Kromkowski the ACPCC received a grant that covered the expenses of the Conference.

Efforts were made to introduce the ACPCC into the multi-ethnic network in the United States. In April 1983, I attended the National Leadership Conference on Ethnic Affairs in Washington D.C. The Conference was the creation of Dr. Kromkowski. Valuable contacts were established with Italian, Lithuanian, Slovak and Ukrainian groups. Methods of combating discrimination, defamation and various forms of bigotry were discussed at length.
