Curtius, Alexander Carol, Ph.D.
Educator. Born in Poland; invited in 1659 by the Dutch to come to New Amsterdam (New York), N. Y. to teach Latin and Greek, and here founded an academy for the Dutch children, the first institution of higher learning in what is now the city of New York.

Kurczewski (Curtius) Alexander Carol
Physician and surgeon. Born in Poland. Invited by the West India Company. came in 1659 to New Amsterdam (now New York City), where he taught Latin and Greek, and founded an academy for the Dutch children, the first institution of higher learning in what is now the city of New York. He was the first physician in the Colony.
