John Babiak (1930 - 2006)

Electrical engineer, Korean War Veteran

John Babiak, 76, of Jenkintown, a retired electrical engineer, died of an apparent heart attack Friday at home.

A native of Aliquippa, Pa., Mr. Babiak served in the Navy as an aviation electronics technician during the Korean War.

After his discharge, he attended Pennsylvania State University, where he met his future wife, Elsie Gallager. Mr. Babiak earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania Military College, now Widener University.

During his 40-year engineering career, he was a power supply distribution and control specialist for several companies, including Rohm & Haas, RCA, Martin Marietta, and GE in Moorestown, where he worked for 11 years before his retirement in 1997.

Mr. Babiak was past master of Freemason Friendship Lodge 400 in Jenkintown. He was an usher for many years at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elkins Park.

His son Arthur said he enjoyed baking bread and making candy and contributed to many church bake sales.

Mr. Babiak's wife of 44 years died in 1999. In addition to his son, he is survived by sons Jonathan and Timothy and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 564 N. Easton Rd., Glenside.

John Babiak (1930 - 2006)

John Babiak, died on Friday, April 21, 2006. John was born in Aliquippa, the son of John S. and Mary C. Babiak, and lived in the borough of Jenkintown since 1970.

John graduated from Aliquippa High School, attended the Geneva College Extension, and served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, John attended the Pennsylvania State University where he met his loving wife, Elsie. John then graduated from the Pennsylvania Military College, now Widener University, earning a B.S. in electrical engineering before becoming a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

John worked as an electrical engineer for over forty years, and he retired from General Electric in Moorestown, N.J., in 1997 after 11 years of service. For many years, John was also the usher at the 8 a.m. service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elkins Park. John was a freemason and an admitted past master of Friendship Lodge 400 in Jenkintown. John love to bake yeast breads, make candy, and contributed to many bake sales at church.

John is survived by three sons: Arthur A. in Ambler, Jonathan C. and Timothy E., both of Austin, Texas; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Elsie. She died in 1999.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 564 North Easton Rd., Glenside, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Glenside.
