Bakanowski, Rev, Adolph, C.R.
Missionary. Born in Mohylowka, Poland, March 28, 1840; the son of Anthony and Olympia. Education: Secondary, in Niemirow. In 1856 entered the Theological Seminary at Kamieniec, where he was ordained May 28, 1863. In 1863 joined the Polish insurrection against Russia, Fled to Austria, In Przemysl he received a false passport from the bishop of Przemysl, Wierzchlejski and fled to Rome. Entered the Congregation of the Resurrection Fathers. In 1866 sailed to U.S. for Texas.

On Nov. 1, 1866 became pastor in Panna Maria. Nominated vicar-general for the Polish Missions. Visited all Polish parishes; traveling by wagon or on horseback, From Nov. 1, 1866 to July 15, 1870 pastor of St. Mary's parish in Panna Maria. Built school and rectory in 1868. Visited Rome, 1870; returned to Chicago, Ill., where he was a pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka parish, 18701873. Left for Rome, Italy, as delegate for the election of the General of the Order of the Resurrection Fathers, 1873. Came from London to Poland, 1880. Superior for six years in Vienna, Austria. Pianist and composer; a famous preacher.
