businessman, grocer, WW II Veteran

Wasil A. Baran, of 144 Berwick St., Beaver Meadows, died at his residence Monday afternoon.

Born in Centown, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Zeleznock) Baran, and he resided in Beaver Meadows his entire life.

He was the owner and operator of Baran's Market, Beaver Meadows, for 63 years. An Army veteran of World War II, he was discharged as staff sergeant of 4th Armored Division and served under General George Patton during the Normandy Landings, the Rhineland Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge.

A member of SS. Peter & Paul's Byzantine Catholic Church, Beaver Meadows and also of the Beaver Meadows Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8225, the Hazleton American Legion Post 76, the Loyal Order of Cooties V.F.W. Post 589 and the Pennsylvania Grocers Association.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his sisters, Mary Sentiwany and Anna Zullick.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Agnes R. Dancho; son, Barry Baran, Hazleton; daughters, Mrs. Richard (Joyce) Hvizda, New Coxeville, Mrs. Joseph (Nita) Zeller, Drums; brothers, Michael and John, of Beaver Meadows, Andrew, of Weatherly and George of Middlesex, NJ.; sisters, Mrs. Ellen Latack, Roseville, Mich., Mrs. Dorothy Goffredo, Bangor; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Pusti Funeral Home, 480 W. Broad St.

Divine Liturgy with the Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated in SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Beaver Meadows on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
