Joseph Baranoski Jr. (1937 - 2008)

Joseph F. Baranoski Jr., 71, police chief in Edgewater Park for 17 years, died of heart failure Sept. 13, 2008 at Lawnwood Medical Center in Port Pierce, Fla. He had recently moved to Okeechobee, Fla.

Mr. Baranoski graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia and served in the Navy in Alaska. He had a variety of jobs, including working as a roofer and a restaurant manager, before joining the Edgewater Park Township Police Department in the mid-1960s. He retired as chief in 1991.

Mr. Baranoski was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., and a past president of the Burlington County Police Chiefs' Association.

After he retired, he and his wife, Anne, lived in North Carolina before moving to Florida two years ago. He enjoyed fishing and reading science fiction.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Baranoski is survived by a son, Dale; daughters Donna Ott and Dorothy; stepchildren; Paul Stankiewicz, Annemarie McGrath, and Christina Stankiewicz; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Joseph Church, 824 Warren St., Beverly, where friends may call after 9 a.m.
