Barszczewski, Stefan
born: June 21, 1862 in Warsaw; died: September 11, 1937 in Warsaw
prose writer, journalist.

In 1891 went to South America, from there he sent correspondence to Warsaw newspapers. He was in the United States during the years 1893-1901. He took part in the life of American Polonia and was, among others, the editor of "Sokol" and "Zgoda." After returning to Warsaw he became a member of the "Kurier Warszawski" editorial team. He published a melodrama "Cuba libre" (1899) based on incidents from the Spanish-American War in which members of the American Polish Falcons took part. He wrote sketches and memoirs, among them: "Na ciemnych wodach Paragwaju" [On the dark waters of Paraguay] (1931); "Na szlaku slawy, krwi i zlota" [On the trail of fame, blood and gold] (1928); the novel "Czerwony Mesjasz" [Red Messiah] (1913); a fantasy novel about the invasion of Europe by China in the 22nd century "Czandu" (1925); "Eliksir prof. Bohusza" [Prof. Bohusz's elixir] (1923); "Przygody kapitana St. Claira" [Adventures of captain St. Clair] (1927).

Barszczewski, Stephen
Writer-Editor. Born in 1870 [!] in Poland. Came to U.S. in 1887 and became editor of Polish Daily "Dziennik Chicagoski" until 1890. From 1890 to 1897, chief editor of Polish weekly paper, "Sokol," organ of the Alliance of Polish Falcons of America, In 1897 editor of "Zgoda," weekly organ of the Polish National Alliance in Chicago, Ill. Served there until 1901. In 1901 returned to Poland, where he was engaged as editor of daily paper "Kuryer Warszawski" in Warsaw, Poland. In 1894 wrote a monograph on Polish National Alliance in Chicago, Ill. Author of drama in 5 acts "Cuba Libre" using the Spanish American War as a background and Polish Falcons as acting persons. Died September 11, 1937 in Warsaw, Poland.

Barszczewski wrote a pamphlet "Polacy w Ameryce" [Poles in America] published in Warsaw, 1902. In it he discusses the ideological differences among the emigrant Poles from various zones of Partition.
