Birkenmajer, Joseph, Ph.D.
Poet, professor. Born March 19, 1897, in Czernichow, Poland. In 1915 joined the Pilsudski Legion; captured by Russia and exiled to Siberia, In 1920 again fought with Bolsheviks. Graduated from the Jagiellonian University and University of Warsaw with Ph.D. degree. Professor at Gorski Gimnasium, Warsaw. Translator of classics; contributor to Polish papers. Professor of Polish at University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis., 1937-1939. Professor of Catholic University, Lublin, Poland, in 1939, Author of "Spotkanie Curtissa z Sienkiewiezem," Milwaukee, Wis., 1938, and many poems. Killed in action on Sept. 26. 1939 during the occupation of Warsaw by Germany.
