Born Jan. 25, 1926, Lodz, Poland; came to U.S., 1970; son of Markus Goldman and Chana (Sandler); married Bella (Blaucwirn); child: Hanna.

(Polish literature), Tel-Aviv University (Israel), 1969-72, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Illinois, Chicago, 1970-72; prof., Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Chicago, 1972 -.
