Sengteller, Louis Alexander
Born April 3, 1846, in Paris, France, where his father Alexander Sengteller, a famous engraver of maps on steel, lived in exile after the Polish Insurrection of 1830-1831. In 1856, his father was engaged in Paris for the United States Coast Survey and came to Washington, D.C. Louis Alexander followed in the footsteps of his father and at the age of sixteen he assisted in the hydrographic surveys of the coast of Maine. In 1863, he served in the U.S. Navy under Admiral Bailey in Florida, and in 1863-65, under Admiral Dahlgren in South Carolina.
