Sobieniowski, Rev. Stanislaus Roman Habdank
Professor. Born May 4, 1879 in Podolia, near Bar, Russia. Son of Florian and Clara (Miklaszewska) Sobieniowski. Education: Gymnasium of St. Ann in Krakow, Poland; graduated in 1900 summa cum laude. Philosophy and Theology in the Universities in Krakow and Lwow, Poland; ordained June 29, 1904; asst. in Buczacz, Stanislawow, Czerniowce. Professor in Brzezany. In 1907 came to U.S. to Hartford, Conn. From 1907 to 1909 asst. at St. John Kanty, Philadelphia, Pa. In 1913 pastor at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. In 1917 enlisted as volunteer in the Polish Army. After the war left for Poland as correspondent of Chicago Daily News, where he became a member of the parliamentary Press Club. In 1926 returned to the U.S. and became pastor in Cleveland, 0.; was very active in organizing courses in Polish in Cleveland High Schools. In 1932 appointed as teacher of Polish at Columbia University, New York, N.Y. here he received his MA, degree from the East European Languages Department; lectured until 1940. Resides now in Chicago, Ill.
