Sobolewski, Paul

Journalist, Born in 1818 in Poland. Political refugee from Poland after the fall of the Polish insurrection against Russia in 1830-31. In 1842 together with Eustace Wyszynski began a publication in New York of the first Polish periodical in America. It was a monthly illustrated magazine "Poland." In 1867 built a house in Chicago, Ill. Translated the most important poetry from the books of Polish writers and then published a book: "Poets and Poetry of Poland in 1880." Second edition in 1930 in Milwaukee, Wis. Devoted to the cause of education among Poles, going so far as to travel from house to house in order to keep the people in touch with the news of the day. Was a school teacher, writer, editor, phrenologist, dramatist. Died in 1884.
