Strzelecki, Paul Edmund, Count
Born in Poland; after the fall of the Polish insurrection in 1831, left for Australia, becoming a famous explorer of the interior of Australia. Traveler and geologist in U.S. First geographer of Australia and named the highest peak of that continent as Mount Kosciuszko on February 15, 1840; placed a Polish flag on the summit. Strzelecki discovered gold mines at the foot of this mountain. Was in Australia from 1838 to 1846.
