Sulakowski, Vincent

Engineer. General-Brigadier of the Confederate Army, Civil War. Born in Poland. Colonel in Polish insurrection against Russia in 1830-31, and in Hungarian insurrection in 1848. Settled in 1850 in New Orleans, La. Joined the Confederate Army and organized the 13th Infantry of the State of Louisiana, the first regiment of Polish Brigade. In September, 1861 nominated Colonel of this regiment. In Virginia General-Major John B. Magruder, on October 3, 1861, nominated Colonel Sulakowski a General Brigadier, commander of the 7th Bridge of 10th and 14th Infantry of Louisiana. In 1862 he went to Texas. Here he made the positions on the river Teche, for that General Magruder nominated him Chief Engineer of his army. Sulakowski took part in the retaking of Galveston from the Union Army. As chief engineer of the Trans-Mississippi Department, he covered the coast of Texas with a chain of fortifications. J. P. Johnson, Inspector General wrote: The fortifications at Velasco, Quintana, Galveston, and Sabina Pass reflect great credit on Colonel Sulakowski. He fortified also Fort Point and Fort Magruder. After the Civil War be resumed his profession as engineer at New Orleans, La., where he died in 1875.
