Sybilska, Mother Mary Monica

Felician Order. Pioneer-nun. Teacher. Superior. Provincial. Born Dec. 6, 1824 in Warsaw. Poland. Daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth Kowerski. Educated in Warsaw. In 1874 sent by Mother Magdalene Borowska, Sup. Gen. with four Sisters to U.S. at the request of Rev. Joseph Dabrowski, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, Polonia, Wis., to take charge of the parish school. Arrived Nov. 20, 1874. On Dec. 3, 1874 opened the school. On Dec. 8, opened a boarding school for girls, an orphanage and a Novitiate, in Polonia, Wis. First provincial-superior of the American Foundation of the Felician Sisters Order, from 1874-1896. In 1880 built a new convent in Detroit, Mich. to which, in 1882, she transferred the Motherhouse, Novitiate, and the orphanage from Polonia. Wis. and opened an academy for girls. Her activities as Provincial were broad in scope. Cyrillus & Methodius School, Lemont, Ill.; 1885 Built the Chapel, Detroit, Mich.; 1885, St. Michael School, Chicago, Ill.; 1885, St. Joseph School, Manistee, Mich.; 1886, Holy Rosary School, Saginaw, Mich.; 1887, St. Adalbert School, Buffalo, N. Y.; 1887, St. Mary's Home for the Aged, orphanage and hospital, founded by Rev. Zdzislaw Luczycki, Manitowoc, Wis.; 1887, St. Stanislaus School, Hilliards, M i c h.; 1888, St. Mary's School, Parisyille, Mich.; 1888, St. Adalbert School, Pittsburgh, Pa.; 1888, St. Joseph School, Chicago, Ill.; 1889, St. Mary's School, Alpena, Mich.; 1890, St. Josaphat School, Detroit, Mich.; 1890, St. Laurentius School, Philadelphia, Pa.; 1891, Holy Rosary School, Baltimore, Md.: 1891, St. Adalbert School, Berea, Ohio.; 1892, St. Joseph School, Webster. Mass.; 1892, Sacred Heart School, Cleveland, Ohio.; 1892, St. Stanislaus School. Nanticoke, Pa.; 1892, St. Hyacinth School, Dunkirk, N.Y.; 1894, St. Joseph School, Mount Carmel, Pa.; 1894. Purchased land for the foundation of Immaculate Heart of Mary Province, Buffalo, N. Y.; 1894, Transfiguration School, Buffalo, N. Y.; 1894, St. John Kanty School, Buffalo, N.Y.; 1895, St. Casimir School, Posen, Mich. She spent the last fifteen years in private life. Died Sept. 15, 1911 in Detroit, Mich.
