Szala, Albin C.

Teacher. Born July 24, 1910 in New Bedford, Mass. Son of Karol and Josephine (Lesniak) Szala. Educated in public schools of New Bedford. Graduate of Alliance Academy, Cambridge Springs, Pa. Continued studies at Alliance Junior College, 1928-1930. In 1930, entered the College of Liberal Arts, Boston University and received Bachelor of Science degree in History in 1932. Taught Polish language, literature, and history during summers of 1932, 1933, and 1934 at the Polish Home in New Bedford. Helped organize and instruct sixty-eight boys and girls in the Harcerstwo of the Polish National Alliance. For services, received a round-trip ticket and tour of Poland from the central offices of the P.N.A. In 1935 became a member of the faculty at Coventry High School in Washington, Rhode Island, teacher of science, mathematics and Polish. This was the first course in Polish that was included in a regular secondary high school curriculum and taught in the State of Rhode Island, if not in all of New England. Since that time, courses have been started in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Attended the Rhode Island College of Education to meet requirements in education and to receive a five year Professional Teaching Certificate. Continued studies at Brown University and Boston University, College of Education. in 1938 was one of seven U.S. scholars working in the field of Polish culture to receive a scholarship to study at the Universities of Krakow, Warsaw and Poznan and tour the country under auspices of the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York. At present (1943) a member of the teaching faculty at Technical High School, Springfield, Mass. Residence: 10 Riverview Ave., Springfield, Mass.
