Szczepanski, Zdzislaw K.
(1917-2009)

Zdzislaw Szczepanski passed away on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 at Fairfax Hospital. Mr. Szczepanski as born in Poland in 1917. He was a well known architect, planner and artist and was an important part of Washington DC's Polonia Circle. Educated in Poland, France and Catholic University of America in Washington DC, he was project director of the Washington Skyline Study and a major designer of the National Zoo and Park. When the National Polish Center, (The American Center of Polish Culture, Inc.), opened in Washington, DC Mr. Szczepanski volunteered his time and talents to draw sketches of the Center building and several interior rooms. He was an accomplished artist, winning many prizes. He was a member of the Polish Home Army in World War II and participated in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. He resided in Falls Church, Virginia with wife Anne and is also survived by daughters, Wanda Suder, Joanna Berrony and two grandchildren. A mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, July 8th at Our Lady Queen of Poland Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Author: designer, Open Air Theater in Park Lafontaine, Montreal (Canada), 1952; designer, National Zoological Park - 17 Year Development Place, Washington, 1962; project director, Washington Skyline Study, 1964; co-author, Urban Land Policy, 1969; International Urban Growth Policies, 1978; 8 one-man art shows, 1975-94.

Member of: Society of Polish Professional Engineers (Poland), 1951-58; American Institute of Architects (AIA); Washington Sculptors Group; American Society for Aesthetics; Polish Catholic Intellectuals "Veritas" (president, Paris, 1945-50, Montreal, 1951-53, currently Washington); vice president, Polish American Congress (P.A.C.), Washington Division; Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (P.I.A.S.A.).

Honors: 1st prize, oil painting, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Association, 1973; 1st prize, figure drawing, Greater Reston Art Center, 1981; various prizes for oil painting, Woodbridge Art League (NJ), 1981, Tolley Gallery, Washington, 1983; Art League of Northern Virginia, Alexandria, 1981,1982.
