Walter Szmid honored

Director of St. Adalbert's Polish Language School

The Polish American Congress and Polonia extend congratulations to Mr. Walter Szmid who was presented with a Distinguished Service Award for his forty years of servlce as Director of St. Adalbert's Polish Language School.

The Award was presented during the annual Father's Day Program and Picnic at Polanka's sponsored by St. Adalbert's Polish Language School.

Mr. Szmid has been a long-time Polish American community activist with several organizations in the Philadelphia area, including the Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania District, the Polish Beneficial Association, the Polish Air Force Veterans and St. Adalbert's Polish Language School.

Mr. Szmid was also honored last year by the Polish American Congress for his many years of quality Service to Polonia, when he was selected Grand Marshal of the 1994 Pulaski Day Parade. We extend congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Szmid and his family who have stood by his side in all of his endeavors on behalf of Polonia.

Polish American community activist in Philadelphia

The Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania District extends condolences to the family of Walter Szmid, a long-time Polish American Community Leader and Director of St. Adalbert's Polish Language School for over 40 years.

Since the time Mr. Szmid emigrated from Poland, he was consistently involved in the Polish American community especially working for the good of young people in the Philadelphia area as Director of St. Adalbert's Polish Language School. Mr. Szmid helped Polish immigrants settle in the United States and kept the children of immigrants attuned to Polish history, culture and pride through his youth group activities.

Mr. Szmid was also a Director of the Polish Beneficial Association and a long-time member of the Polish American Congress, the Polish Air Force Veterans Association and the Polish Army Veterans Association. During his life he received many awards for his community activities and for his pride in his Polish heritage.

Mr. Szmid's Funeral Mass took place on Saturday, June 15th in St. Adalbert Church, in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section; he was buried in Resurrection Cemetery. The Polonia of our area extends condolences to Mr. Szmid's wife, Halina, his children and grandchildren and is grateful to them for their outstanding support of his community activities.
