Szulc, Nicolaus Gustave
Engineer. Born 1807 in Krakow, Poland. Education in Krakow under his father, engineer of chemistry and mining. Later studied in Italy, France and Austria. In 1830-1831 took part in the Polish insurrection against Russia together with his father and brother. After the fall of uprising fled to United States, and settled in Salina (now Syracuse), N.Y., where he was engaged in chemical work. In 1836 engaged by Onondaga Salins, where he won recognition. When William Lyon Mackenzie in Canada organized the insurrection against England in 1838, Szulc joined on request of Mackenzie; November 1838 nominated commandant of the famous expedition of Prescott, at the battle at Windmill, Ontario. After the fall of the insurrection, Szulc was captured by the English, executed Dec. 8, 1838 at the Fort Henry in Kingston.
