Szwajkart, Stanislaus
Teacher, writer. Born March 19, 1857 in Tarnopol, Poland. In Sept., 1881 came to U.S. Gave piano lessons. Was an organist and contributed to different Polish newspapers. Came to Chicago in 1884 and taught in the parochial school of St. Stanislaus Kostka parish, where he stayed until 1886. In 1888-1889 acted as a clerk at the local postoffice. In 1915 celebrated silver jubilee of his work as an editor. In 1916 "Dziennik Chicagoski" published his first poem: "Mistrz Twardowski." All his writings, not published yet, are in the Museum of the P.R.C.U., Chicago, Ill. In 1917 he received from Pope Benedict XV the Cross of Knight of St. Sylvester, the first Pole in U.S. to be awarded such a distinction. Died May 15, 1918.
