Polish Heritage Alive!
------ An Invitation to Join the
Polish Heritage Society of PhiladelphiaThe Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia (PHSP) was founded in 1964 to promote Polish culture, customs and history in the Philadelphia area. Over the years it has established an annual Chopin Concert, staged an art competition, arranged exhibitions of Polish posters, and gives out scholarships. The organization holds an annual Poloniaise Ball to raise money for its scholarship fund.
Among its activities is the placement of Historic Markers, devoted to persons of Polish background and approved by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). Markers have included: bridge engineer Ralph Modjeski (2007), helicopter innovator Frank Piasecki (2010), and biomedical engineer Walter Golaski (2014). In 2022 the PHMC approved a marker for Philadelphia frozen food entrepreneur and Polonia supporter Edward Piszek (a.k.a. the "Fishcake King") which was dedicated on Sept. 22, 2025 near his former home in Fort Washington, PA.
During the 2026 Semiquincentennial of the American Revolution the Polish Heritage Society hosted the Annual Convention of the American Council for Polish Culture (ACPC) at the Old City Marriott Hotel. In attendance at a ceremony at the Kosciuszko House Memorial was Bogdan Klich, Head of the Polish Diplomatic Mission in Washington DC. As this was also the year that the Benjamin Franklin Bridge had the 100th Anniversary of its opening, the Society arranged for a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial tablet on the Philadelphia side of the bridge to honor chief engineer Ralph Modjeski. The Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia is an affiliate organization of the nation-wide American Council for Polish Culture (ACPC). As a benefit of this association each of our members receives the tri-yearly Polish Heritage Newsletter published by the ACPC which features stories about the activities of its member groups. The ACPC also assists affiliates through project grants and we participate in and support some of its national initiatives.
