Gorecka, Hanka Erica
Sculptor in paper, designer. Born in New York, N. Y. Attended Washington Irving High School, New York City, where she majored in art. Upon completion of her courses there she continued her studies in art at the Cooper Union Institute Art School. After graduation in 1937 she became acquainted with Maria Wertem, a Polish painter and teacher. Together they worked to introduce the art of Poland--both its ancient and modern forms--to the American public. This was accomplished by arranging exhibits for various museums and galleries all over the country. Her work met with favorable comment and orders for her paper sculpture for window display purposes began to pour in from such stores as Altman's, Bergdorf-Goodman's and Mary Chess. The Metropolitan Opera Company had her make up figures of the principal characters in various operas, the figures to be displayed in Dallas, Texas, department store windows. Her work has been on display at the Women's International Exposition in 1941 and 1942. Articles on her work have appeared in the International Press, Acme Press, The American Artist, as well as most of the leading newspapers. She accepted this invitation and now devotes much of her time to teaching. Miss Gorecka became Mrs. Harold Gerard Egan on November 23, 1942. Her husband, a former classmate and studio partner of hers, is an accomplished mural painter and is now serving with the United States Army in the capacity of designer and draftsman.
