Gutowski, Rudolf
physician
(January 19, 1816 - 1894)

Born in the village of Malachowo on January 19, 1816, and baptized Arthur Alexander Rudolf von Gutowski on February 7, 1816 at the parish church in Witkowo. His parents were Walentyn von Gutowski and Katerina nee von Koszutska.

As a student, he took part in the November Insurrection of 1830 and was captured by the Russians.

He came to the United States, arrived in New York from Trieste in 1834.

That same year (1834) he was in Woodbury, CT, where he was befriended by Dr. Henry Skilton to whom he related his story of escape during forced transport to Siberia. He lived in Dr. Skilton's house as part of his family, teaching him Polish.

While in America he visited the city of Savannah, looking for traces of Casimir Pulaski.

He was educated as a medical doctor and served as the chief medical officer for a regiment of Cossacks in Ottoman Turkey.

In 1853 he is listed as a member of the Polish Literary-Historical Society in Paris.

He donated to the Jagiellonian University archives an old Polish bible and other items.

He died in 1894.
