Kierzkowski, Alexander Edward
Civil engineer. Born in the Duchy of Posen, Nov. 21, 1816; the son of Major Jacob Philip Kierzkowski, a Polish nobleman, patriot, and a knight of several military orders. In the Polish War for Independence of 1830-31, Alexander, then a lad of fourteen years, enlisted, served till its downfall, and then fled to France. In Paris he attended the "Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures," where he obtained his diploma as Civil Engineer and migrated in 1841 to Canada. From 1858 to 1870 he took an active part in Canadian politics. In 1858 he was elected from Montarville, P.Q., to the Legislative Council and in 1861 from Vercheres, P. Q., to the Legislative Assembly, but on both occasions unseated. In 1867, however, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons for St. Hyacinthe and remained in this capacity till his death, Aug. 4, 1870, at St. Ours. He also held different positions, as: Civil Engineer to the Public Works; from 1842 to 1844, Assistant Quartermaster General of No. 5 Military District Lower Canada, Director of the Lower Canadian Agricultural Association, Lieut-Col. commanding Second Battalion St. Hyacinthe Militia, President of School Commissioners and seignior of St. Charles.
