Kossak, William
Engineer, captain in Civil War. Prepared plans for the fort of Vicksburg, Miss., Corinth, Miss. and Fort Donelson, Tenn. Born in Poland. Joined the Union Army on May 20, 1861, in St. Louis, Mo., as Second Lieutenant of Fifth Infantry of Missouri. After three months of service he was commanded to the staff of General Ulysses Grant. Later became Chief Engineer in 17th Corps Army under General McPherson. At Shiloh was of great help and assistance to General Sherman. In Civil War active especially at Fort Donelson. After the Civil War he lived in St. Louis, Mo. Honorable discharge granted him on July 10, 1866. Deceased.From: "Who's Who in Polish America" by Rev.
