Kowalski, Louis
Theatrical producer. Organizer of the Polish theatre in U.S. Pioneer of Polish Art in U.S. Born Dec. 8, 1881 in Warsaw, Poland; received elementary and secondary education in Poland. In 1905 came to U.S. and organized in the same year "Polish Folks Theatre" in New York City. In 1918 organized a professional theatre in New York, and was until 1940 its director. Directed dramas, comedies, operas, operettas and others. Staged operas and theatrical performances in different towns throughout the country. In 1925 directed opera "Flis" by Stanislaus Moniuszko in New York. In 1926 staged an opera "Hrabina" by St. Moniuszko and in 1930 an opera "Halka" by same composer. Directed opera "Halka" in 1934 in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago. In 1940 was a general manager of the Polish American Opera Company in New York City, which again presented "Halka" February 18, 1940.
