Career: research assistant, State Hygienic Institute, 1949-51, research associate, Institute of Biochemistry, 1951-53, Warsaw; docent, Department of Microbiology, University of Warsaw, 1955-57; assistant prof., Institute of Microbiology, Rutgers University, New Brunswick (NJ), 1958-59; National Institutes of Health (NIH) fellow, Biology Department, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (MD), 1959-62; associate member, Wistar Institute, 1962-66, associate prof., 1966-68, prof., 1968-90, Department of Medical Genetics, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; visiting prof., Polish Academy of Sciences, 1980, U.S.S.R. Author: over 80 scientific papers; co-author, 4 books.; first to prove molecular mechanism of recombination as a breakage and reunion of DNA molecules.
