Kraus, Rev. Gabriel
Roman Catholic clergyman. Born in Zolynia, Poland, Aug. 14,1867. Attended secondary school in Rzeszow and Theological Seminary in Przemysl, where he was ordained to the holy priesthood. He emigrated to Brazil where he worked as a priest for two years and then came to U. S. His first assignment in America was as assistant pastor in one of the Polish churches in Cleveland and then he was accepted to the Philadelphia diocese and appointed pastor of St. Lawrence Church Philadelphia, Pa., in 1897. Transferred as pastor to St. Hedwig's Church, Chester, Pa., in 1932. He was one of the pioneer Polish American priests in America. For his services to Poland during the World War I and for his devotion to the cause of Poland he was decorated with a cross of "Polonia Restituta" by the Polish Government. The Polish Army Veterans Association awarded him with the "Swords of General Haller" for his contributions and organization of Polish Army during the World War I.
