Krupa, Gene
Ace drummer of the world. Orchestra conductor. Born 1909 in So. Chicago, Ill. Attended the parochial school and graduated from Bowen High School in Chicago, Ill. Entered St. Joseph's College, Rensselaer, Ind., to train for the priesthood, but instead became a drummer. Made his debut when 13 years old. Came to New York in 1929, to join Red Nichols dance band and played in the pit for the revue "Strike Up the Band." In 1934 cast his lot with Benny Goodman, soon was known as the drum sensation of the band. Later started his own band. Never took a lesson in drumming in his life. A staunch defender and advocate of swing music. Married in 1935. Hobbies: stamp collecting, golf, tennis and basketball. Wrote a book on: "Instruction on Swing Drumming."
