Karol Nawarynski
Karol Nawarynski has rejuvenated the Club by expanding membership, renewing participation in the Pulaski Day Parade, and organizing a bus tour of Polish Philadelphia. He brings in interesting speakers and entertainment, such as Lydia Kaminska, who is known for her virtuosity on the classical accordion. He showcases a traveling Polish culture exhibit, and his enhancements to the Polonaise Bali include a performance by folk dancers to enrich the evening. In essence, he wants everyone to have fun while learning about Polish culture.
Karol was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania to John and Jennie Nawarynski who were deported from Poland during World War II to work on German farms as slave laborers. After the war, while Karol's parents lived in displaced persons camps, his father served in the Polish military on German soil under auspices of the American military. After immigrating to America, Karol's father became a machinist and his mother worked as a seamstress.
The middle son of three boys, Karol grew up in a world of post war prosperity and opportunity. To be part of that prosperity, Karol worked in a bakery by age 13 while going to public school. The family attended Polish Mass at Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church and spent many a Saturday night dancing at the Polish American Club. When they moved to the suburbs of Salisbury Township, he attended the Salisbury School District, and completed high school in 1968.
Karol was a top student at the Guide School of Dance as a youth, and later, became a master dance teacher at the school. He appeared at various venues, including the Chef Halftown Show Broadcast from TV Channel 6 in Philadelphia. At Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, Karol belonged to the Polish Club and spent three years with the Kujawiaki, a folk dance troupe performing throughout the United States. He spent his junior year at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. He graduated cum laude in 1972 with a major in Polish studies.
At Alliance, Karol met Mary Ann Parcinski, daughter of Dr. Henry J. and Violet C. Parcinski. Her father was president of what became Mercer County Community College, and then, president of Alliance College (1962 and 1971.) Mary Ann and Karol married in 1972 and are the proud parents of Gregory and Suzanne. Gregory is a database administrator for the Philadelphia law firm of Dechert LLP. Suzanne is a nuclear medicine technologist with the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Mary Ann teaches English as a Secondary Language in Galloway Township.
Karol was an assistant sales director with the Polish National Alliance in Chicago before serving in the army. Then, his 21-year career in the army reserve took him to many military installations as a drill instructor with the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8.) While continuing studies with the Institute of Financial Education, he also worked for the NY Life Insurance Company and Montgomery Ward in Pennsylvania. He then joined the Carteret Savings and Loan in Newark for 10 years, became branch manager in Hamilton Twp. then worked for Foster Mortgage in Princeton, and Roma Savings and Loan in Trenton.
In 1986, Karol became operations analyst, then budget analyst, with NJ Human Services Division. In 1993, he became a tax investigator for the Department of Treasury, Division of Taxation while studying accounting at Mercer County Community College. Karol is also associated with Varsity Pizza in Lawrenceville. Older brother, Stanley, is self-employed and younger brother, John, is associated with Just Born, Inc. of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and works in real estate.
Karol is affiliated with the Polish American Congress, Polish American Cultural Center in Philadelphia, Polish American Historical Assoc., Polish National Center in Washington, American Council for Polish Culture, Kosciuszko Foundation, Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America, and the Pilsudski Institute of America.
