Nowak, John A.
Public official. Born Feb. 25, 1908 in Baltimore, Md.; the son of Edward and Margaret (Ratajczak) Nowak. Educated at St. Stanislaus parochial school, Calvert Hall College in 1927, and studied law at the University of Baltimore, Md., but has not entered that profession. Associated with his father in the grocery business. In 1934 elected assemblyman to the State Legislature of Maryland from the city of Baltimore, and in 1938 reelected. In 1939 nominated Supervisor of Census of the Third Congressional District of Baltimore. Founder and treasurer of the Young Men's Polish Democratic Club; vice-president of the East Baltimore Business Men's Association; president of the Young People's Democratic League; member of P.N.A.; sponsor of bill commemorating Casimir Pulaski Day and Maryland Workmen's Compensation Act known as the Novak's Occupational Disease Law, enacted into law in 1939.
