Miroslaw (Stan) Noyszewski

Mr. Noyszewski's journey to Chicago and to the engineering profession has been circuitous. He was born in Wilno, Poland before World War II. When the Russians invaded Poland in September 1939, he and his family were deported to Siberia in February 1940. After leaving Russia, he and his family lived in Persia, now Iran, then in Palestine, in England, and arrived in the United States in 1949. The family settled in Chicago and he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of lllinois in 1956. In 1966 he earned a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1956, Mr. Noyszewski joined the engineering department of the Illinois Central Railroad. His entire professional engineering career of 43 years was with the Illinois Central Railroad. He has held various engineering and administrative positions and retired in 1999 as Engineer of Structures. In this capacity he was responsible for and directed bridge and building activities on the entire Illinois Central Railroad system that extends from Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico. He is licensed in Illinois as a Professional Engineer as well as a Structural Engineer.

Since joining the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as a student member and later becoming an officer, Mr. Noyszewski throughout his entire professional career has been active on various national technical committees. For the Association of American Railroads he served on the Engineering Division Committee on Bridge Structures and on the Bridge Steering Committee. For the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of-Way Association he has served since 1962 on various committees including 11 years as chair and vice chair.

He is a Fellow and Life Member of ASCE, a Charter member of the Structural Engineering Institute and a Life Member of Structural Engineers Association of Illinois and the National Society of Professional Engineers. Other engineering association activities included: Director of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association, Treasurer and President of the Polish American Engineers Association, Director of the University of Illinois Civil Engineering Alumni Association and the Transportation Research Board Committees.

He and his lovely wife, Teresa who has been active in the Ladies Auxiliary, have been married for over forty years. They have five children and are proud grandparents of six.
