Rhode, Paul Peter, Most Rev., D.D., R.C. Bishop
Born Sept. 18, 1871 in Wejherowo, Poland; son of August and Christine Rhode. In 1880 came to Chicago, Ill., with his mother where he received his elementary education at St. Stanislaus Kostka parochial school. Graduated from St. Mary's College, St. Mary's Ky., and St. Ignatius College, Chicago, Ill. Philosophy and theology studied at St. Francis Seminary, St. Francis, Wis.; ordained June 16, 1894. In 1895 appointed assistant pastor of St. Adalbert's parish, Chicago, Ill. In 1895 organizer and pastor of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Chicago until 1896. From Oct. 31, 1896 to 1915 pastor of St. Michael's parish in Chicago. On July 29, 1908 consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, where he served as such until 1915. Vicar-General Archdiocese of Chicago, 1909-1915. On July 5, 1915 transferred to the See of Green Bay, Wis., where he is now serving. Organizer and honorary president of the Polish Priests Association in United States. First to organize help to regain independence of Poland, first Polish Bishop in U.S., honorary chaplain of Polish Roman Catholic Union of America. In 1910 founded the St. Hedwig's Orphanage, Niles, Ill. A priest of ability and distinction whose services to America have been noted on the floor of the United States Senate, and whose sacrifices for Poland are known in all quarters. His patriotic work both for America and Poland was wholehearted and intensive during the entire period of the first world war.
