Rybicki, Edward Constantine
Civic leader and economist. Born in New York City, Aug. 14, 1879. Son of Albert and Antonia Rybicki, grandson of Theodore Rybicki, major in the Polish Army in the uprising against Russia in 1863. Organizer and director of New York City's Free Employment Agency, 1930-34; Supervisor of labor mediation for the New York State Department of Labor, 1935; New York State Assistant Director of Employment and New York State Director of Labor Relations, Federal Works Agency, 1935-1941. From 1930 to 1934, represented the mayors of New York at all Polish functions: Arrival of first Polish liner; arrival of the "Dar Pomorza"; reception of General Dreszer; reception to General HaIler; reception to Ignace Jan Paderewski; reception to Polish Olympic team, reception to Polish World's greatest balloonists, winners of the James Gordon Bennett trophy, etc., etc. In 1927, at the request of the New York American, wrote a history of the contributions made by the Poles of Greater New York to the city's great development. Was responsible for the naming of "Marie Curie Avenue" in New York City; organized New York State honor by the colleges on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the discovery of radium by Marie Sklodowska Curie. In association with the Rev. Felix F. Burant, Rector of St. Stanislaus Church in New York City, organized New York State Poland Day, which has for four years been proclaimed by Governor Lehman and the mayors of New York State; is also responsible for the planting of the trees in City Hall Park, New York City, in honor of Generals Kosciuszko and Pulaski; also a tree in honor of Mme. Curie. Urged the United States Coast Guard to name a cutter in honor of General Pulaski, and the United States Maritime Commission through his efforts named a Liberty Ship in honor of General Kosciuszko. President of the New York State Conference of Polish Clubs; president New York State League of Economics; chairman League of Safety Engineers of New York State.
