ADELINE NOWINSKI ZACHARIASIEWICZ
Mrs. Adeline Nowinski Zachariasiewicz made her debut in 1941 in this same Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria at the first Kosciuszko Foundation debutante presentation 60 years ago. Twenty-two years later her daughter, Danuta, followed in her mother's footsteps and was presented at a Kosciuszko Foundation Ball. Mrs. Zachariasiewicz's participation in the Kosciuszko Foundation Annual Balls was in the best tradition of her parents, Lucien and Stacia Nowinski, who were strong supporters and benefactors of the Foundation.
Mrs. Zachariasiewicz, born in Wallingford, Connecticut, spent three years in Poland attending various programs and studied ballet at the famous Taciana Wysocka School in Warsaw. After returning to the United States she attended the McDowell School of Fashion Design in New York City and, upon graduation, became a partner in her parents' bridal shop. She was actively involved in the Polish-American community and during the war was a member of a group of young Polish-American women who offered home hospitality to Polish Air Force pilots en route to the training camps in Canada.
After her marriage to Walter Zachariasiewicz, at that time executive director of the Polish American Immigration and Relief Committee and a former political refugee himself, she continued her participation in a broad spectrum of Polish-American activities, sponsoring and aiding in the resettlement of a number of Polish war refugees and in fund raising events benefiting the immigration programs.
After her husband's appointment as a Special Assistant to the Postmaster General, she moved to Washington DC where she became immersed in the life of the Washington metropolitan area PolishAmerican community. Together with her husband, who was active in Polonia on the national and local level, she joined the Polish American Congress, Polish American Arts Association, and the Breast Cancer Prevention Program for Poland. She also chaired the Polonaise Ball of the Polish Combatants Association in Washington. Throughout she continued, together with her husband, membership in the Kosciuszko Foundation.
Last October Mrs. Zachariasiewicz and her husband were honored at the special banquet sponsored by the Washington Chapter of the Friends of the John Paul II Foundation. Mr. Zachariasiewicz as a member of the governing body of the Pope's foundation in Rome, serves as an advisor to the group.
