Zalinski, Edmund Louis Gray
Army officer. Inventor. Born Dec. 13, 1849 in Kurnik, Poland. When four years old, came with parents to U.S. and settled in Utica, N.Y. in 1853. Received his secondary education in Seneca, N.Y. In 1863 left school to enlist in the Union Army, as private in the 2nd Cavalry of New York; becoming aide de-camp to General Nelson A. Miles. After the battle at Hatcher's Run, Va., Feb. 23, 1865 commissioned Lieutenant. Discharged Sept. 29, 1865. Again commissioned second lieutenant, Feb. 23, 1866, first lieutenant Jan. 1,1867. From 1872 to 1876 he was an instructor, teaching military science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other similar institutions; became an authority on military science and an inventor of military appliances. Dec. 9, 1887 appointed captain of Fifth Artillery of U.S.; resigned Feb. 3. 1894. Married Ann Chardon from Medford, Mass. Appointed Major of U.S. Army. Was inventor of numerous devices. Died March 10,1909.
