Colonel in Civil War. Colonel of the 82nd Infantry of U.S. Army composed of colored people, organized at Port Hudson, La., in September, 1863. Fought at Port Hudson, Barrancas, Marianna, Mitchell Creek, Pine Barren Ford, Fort Blakely. When general Asboth was wounded, he lead the expedition safely to Port Pickens. Fla., marching 400 miles; commanded the first brigade of colored people although he was not a general. In 1865 he was appointed commandant of the garrison in Apalachicola, Fla.
