Lewandowski, Rev. Vincent
Pioneer priest, organizer. Born May 29, 1841 in Lewice, Poland. Elementary and secondary education received in the schools at Poznan, Poland. In 1860 joined the Order of Franciscan Fathers in Poznan; ordained in 1864. In 1872 because of German persecution left his counitry. In 1875 came to U.S. and settled in Toledo, Ohio, where he organized St. Anthony's Parish in 1875, and St. Hedwig's Parish in 1876. Built two magnificent churches. Stayed on at Toledo until 1885 as pastor of St. Hedwig's Parish. From 1885 to 1888 assistant pastor at St. Hyacinth's Parish in Milwaukee, Wis., and was its first pastor until 1899. On July 7, 1899 he resigned because of ill health. Died Jan. 22, 1900 in Milwaukee, Wis.
