Lewinski, Corwin Edward H.
Physician, historian, lecturer. Completed studies in the economic, social and biological sciences for the degree of Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1910. Participated in the editing of the Population Census of 1910. In 1911 his doctor's thesis on Workmen's Insurance in Belgium was published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor and distributed in 19,000 copies by the Government. Since May 1911 to date he is associated with the New York Academy of Medicine as Executive Secretary of the Committee on Public Health Relations, and has conducted all its surveys and studies. In his official capacity he has participated in all major developments in the City of New York. In 1912 he organized the Association of Outpatient Clinics and helped to develop the first medical standards of dispensary work. During 1917 and 1918 he directed the first comprehensive survey of dispensaries ; sections of which were published in various professional publications. In 1924 G. P. Putnam's published his book "The Hospital Situation in Greater New York" which is regarded as a standard work in this field of study. Following the publication of this book, the United Hospital Fund organized the Bureau of Hospital Information and Service, of which he was Director for twelve years. Several years later he organized as a subdivision of this work a Bureau on Convalescence, which formulated the first standards of convalescent care. For a number of years he served as Chairman of the Chelsea Health District of C.O.S. and acted as consultant in the Public Health Dept. of the U. S. Public Health Service. Member of the Board of Directors of the New York Tuberculosis and Health Association; the New York Child Labor Committee; the Committee on Neighborhood Health Development; the Committee of Twenty on Street and Outdoor Cleanliness; several committees of the City Club. He is Secretary and Treasurer of the Blood Transfusion Betterment Association. For a year he was an instructor in the Extension Department at Columbia University and for two years taught at New York University. In 1934 he was elected Honorary Charter Fellow of the American College of Hospital Administrators. In 1928-1929 he organized the International Hospital Association of which he was General Secretary and Treasurer for several years, and now is its Honorary President. He is a Fellow of the American Public Health Association, the American Statistical Association, the Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Hospital Association, the Alumni Association of Columbia University, and an Associate Fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine and of the American Medical Association. Since 1936 he is Managing Director of the Blood Transfusion Betterment Association, New York. Residence: 1215 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y.
