Mayor of Hamtramck, MI and director Polish American Historical Association (PAHA)

Dr. Karen Majewski is the Mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan since 2006. She served on the City Council from 2003 to 2005 and as President/Mayor Pro-Tem from 2004 to 2005. She is also the the Executive Director and Editor of Polish American Historical Association (PAHA) since 1998. In addition. Dr. Majewski is the Curator of the Rare Book Collection at Orchard Lake Schools, Orchard Lake, Michigan, since 1996.

She received her Doctorate in American Culture from the University of Michigan in 1998. Her Dissertation Title was "Traitors and True Poles: Narrating a Polish American Identity, 1880 1939."

She received her Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees in English from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale.

She attended the Center for International Studies Intensive Summer Language Program (Hungarian) and Beloit College, in 2003. Archival Practice Training Program, and Polish National Archives, in Warsaw, Poland in 2001. She has taught at St. Mary's College, Orchard Lake, Michigan as an Associate Professor of Polish and East Central European Studies. Dr. Majewski also taught Literature and Film, Major American Writers, Ethnicity in Literature, Business Writing, Argumentive Writing and English Composition.

Among Dr. Majewski's awards and grants is the recent Waclaw Lednicki Prize, Best Book in the Humanities on a Polish Subject, Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America, 2005 Oskar Halecki Award, Best Book in Polish American Studies, Polish American Historical Association, 2004. She received the Distinguished Service Award, Polish American Historical Association, 2003, American Council of Learned Societies Foreign Language Study Grant (Hungarian), 2002 Halecki Prize for Distinguished Dissertation in Polish American Studies, Polish American Historical Association, 2000.

Her book, "Traitors and True Poles: Narrating a Polish American Identity, 1880-1939" was published by Ohio Univ. Press in 2003. Dr. Majewski has published numerous and diverse articles, papers and made presentations reflecting her great variety of interests and areas of study, both here in the United States and Poland.

She reviewed "Hoopi Shoopi Donna" by Suzanne Strempek Shea, and "Children of Strangers" by Anthony Bukoski for Forkroads No. 6.

She is a member of a number of professional organizations: American Historical Association, American Studies Association, Immigration and Ethnic History Society Modem Language Association, Polish American Historical Association, Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America, and the Social Science History Association.
