Manel, Very Rev. Francis S., O.F.M.Roman Catholic clergyman. Born in Jeziorki, Poland. May 14, 1864; son of Francis Manel and Ursula Majewski. Education: elementary schools at Sejny, Poland. At the age of 23 left Poland for America, where he was employed as an organist in Manistee, Mich. In 1889, he came to Pulaski with the intention of devoting his life as a religious lay-brother in the service of God. In 1880, a year later, began his theological studies in St. Louis, Mo., under the direction of the Franciscan Fathers. Four years later was ordained to the holy priesthood by the Most Rev. John Kain, Archbishop of St. Louis. Pastor of St. Stanislaus Church, Hofa Park, Wis., 1893-95; Master of Novices, 1899; Pastor of Assumption of the B.V.M. Church and Superior of the Monastery, Pulaski, Wis., 1900; Rector of St. Bonaventure High School, Pulaski, Wis., 1905; Founder and editor of the "Franciscan Messenger," published in Polish. In 1914 appointed Commissary General of the Commissariate of the Assumption of the B.V.M., with headquarters in Pulaski, Wis. In 1918 re appointed to that office for a second term of six years. In 1922 opened a new high school for Catholic boys of Polish parentage in preparation for the priesthood. In 1926 appointed for the third time Commissary of Franciscan Fathers. Following a short illness, he died shortly after consecration during Mass, which he celebrated January 17, 1928.
