Marchewka, Edward
(1917 - 2007)Edward Marchewka died December 28, 2007 of cardiac arrest in his sleep after many years of complications from normal pressure hydocephlis.
Ed was born in Monessen, PA to Wladislaw Marchewka and Bronislawa Wojciechowski. He was raised there and was schooled in drafting and electrical engineering. He served in the Polish Armed Forces between February 1942 and was honorably discharged in May 1946. He was with the First Armoured Division during WW II under Major General S. Maczek which saw action starting in Normandy, France. They closed the Falaise Gap and took part in many battles in the great pursuit throughout Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was awarded both a Bronze Star and a Cross of Merit with Swords among other medals.
He was demobilized as a US citizen back to Monessen, PA and soon thereafter settled in Pittsburgh, PA after his marriage to Frances Baranowski. He worked for Pittsburgh Steel and then tried his hand running a family grocery store. However the bulk of his career was spent in his own greeting card distribution business. He serviced small and large grocery stores throughout western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.
He was very active in Polish organizations. He was a life long member of the PNA. He was a member and officer of PNA group 1146 and served at times on Council 60. After moving to Pittsburgh, he was active as an officer in both PNA Group 1243 and Council 38. He was a member of the Polish Army Veterans Post 41 District 3 in Pittsburgh as an officer which lead to his post as commander. He was also very active in various Polish functions and services at St. Cyprian & Our Lady Queen of Peace on the North Side in Pittsburgh.
He is survived by his wife Frances Marchewka, daughter Christine Pawlowski of Erie, PA, his son Daniel Marchewka of GIenshaw, PA, son Edward Marchewka of Wexford, PA and daughter Frances Whiteside of Pittsburgh, PA. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
