Taubenschlag, Rafael
Professor of Roman Law. Born in Przemysl Poland, May 6, 1881. University of Cracow awarded him a degree of Doctor of Laws. From 1904 to 1919 engaged in the Polish courts. From 1913 to 1919 he was lecturer of Roman Law and from 1919 to 1939 Professor of Roman Law at the University of Cracow. Dean of Philosophy Department in the University of Cracow. Member of the Polish Academy and a member of several other learned societies in Poland and abroad. Author of about 80 monographs on Roman, Grecian and medieval Polish Laws, also author of monographs on Ancient and Modern Laws published in the Polish, English, French, German and Italian languages. An authority in Poland on Canon Law. Came to U.S. in October, 1940 from France, where he lectured at the University Aix-en-Provence. Visiting professor of law at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Active member of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America and its first Associate Director elected for the term of 1942-45. In 1942 was appointed visiting research professor of ancient civilization at Columbia University for a period of three years, 1942-45. Address: 37 East 36th Street, New York City.
