Turyn, Alexander
Professor of classical philosophy. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Dec. 26, 1900. In 1923 University of Warsaw granted him a degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Completed special studies in his chosen field at Berlin, Italy and Greece. In 1923 junior instructor in the University of Warsaw. Appointed lecturer in 1929, and in 1935 appointed special professor of classical philology as a successor to the famous Professor Thaddeus Zielinski. Member of Polish Academy and other learned societies in Poland and abroad. Author of about 40 monographs covering his chosen field of studies and research published in the Polish, French and German languages. Came to U.S. on February, 1941. Professor at the University of Michigan. Corresponding member of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America. Author of "The Manuscript Tradition of the Tragedies of Aeschylus," published in 1942 (in English), by the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America.
