Wengierski, Thomas Kajetan
Poet. Born in Poland. He came to the U.S. in 1783 for the purpose of forming an acquaintance with the American people, especially General George Washington. He made a tour of nearly all the States which then comprised the Union and met at Washington at his headquarters at Rocky Hill, New Jersey. The poet was charmed with his personality and manner. In New York he witnessed the withdrawal of the remnants of the British army and the flight of the Loyalists to Canada. Wengierski came in personal contact with many Revolutionary leaders during his one year stay. He left a very interesting account of his travels in a diary which is considered to be the oldest known original description of the United States by a Polish author. From: "Who's Who in Polish America" by Rev.
