Werten, Mary
Artist, painter. Studied art in the School of Fine Arts, Warsaw, Poland, and then emigrated to Paris where she continued the study of art. She exhibited her work in Poland since 1922. Her specialty in the beginning was peasant children. She was an instructor of art, illustrator of a children's magazine "Plomyk," published in Poland. She created artistic toys for children. In this field she made a great success. The Polish Government invited her to create ornaments for Christmas trees and she was appointed artistic director of a manufacturing firm "Grom" in Poland which produced toys. She was also director of International School of Art in Poland to which many art instructors from U.S. came to study art during the summer months. At the invitation of one of her American pupils Mary Werten comes to America. In 1933 at the request of Mrs. Pratt she organized a traveling art exhibit to acquaint the American public with Polish art. This exhibit was a great success. Every year thereafter Mary Werten used to come to America -- lecturing on Polish art, directing exhibits and conducting art courses. As a pedagogue Mary Werten prepared a film for the teaching of art to school children. This film was distributed by Herman Foundation of New York City. Her paintings for children's rooms met with approval in America. Address:
