Witek (Mickey), Nicholas J.
Sportsman. Born in Kingston, Pa., Dec. 19, 1915. He received his elementary and secondary education in Kingston, Pa. His baseball career started in 1934 as a member of the Bassett Baseball team, Bi-State League in North Carolina. His batting average with that team was .319. For his outstanding record as a player he received from the manager of the team a bonus of one hundred dollars. In 1935 he was bought by Norfolk team, Piedmont League. Here his batting average was .314. In the beginning of the baseball season of 1936 he came to the Newark team but soon after he was sent to Binghamton team and from there he was transferred to Norfolk team where he completed his 1936 season. In 1937 he again played for the Norfolk team and his batting average then was .320. In 1938 he played for Newark Bears, International League, where he scored a batting average of .296 and was known as the best short-stop in the International League. In 1939 he was bought by the New York Giants for a sum of $30,000 and two players. During off-season Mickey plays with a Polish Orchestra of Luzerne, Pa.
